Self Check Outs

Do you want to know something that bugs the crap out of me?   Self check out lines at grocery stores.  Why does it bug me?  I'll tell you...which is why I'm here...  You DON'T get any incentive (other than possibly getting out of the store sooner) for using them!   Do you want me to use them?  Then give me a discount for doing YOUR work!  Otherwise, I'll just go to where some poor person is making as close to minimum wage as they can muster.  I feel better helping someone earn a meager living!

There are also two thoughts that seem to be prevalent with stores.  You have the store that's busy as can be, they have several lanes open, including an "Express Lane"  which isn't always express since 99% of the time if I DO have  "15 items or less"  there's a little old lady that has to write a check, and waits until they are all finished and giving a total to even put the date, the name of the store and sign it. (although I guess that's a little better than the little old ladies who "have the penny" and need to go through six different change purses to find it... I used to keep a pocket full of pennies when I worked at a G.C.Murphy's back in the early 80's and when they'd go "Oh wait, I have the penny!"  I'd say "so do I!"  and get them out...mostly during the Christmas holidaze when the line was half way back through the store)  Anyway...the busy store has several lanes open, and they have a self check lane, with a single attendant standing there making sure that the people using it aren't tossing every other item into their bag, and you have the store that I usually use (since it's closer to my house)  that has ONE human check out lane, usually manned by a new person (because they can't seem to keep people)  and several self check lanes, with one person who is apparently the "attendant"  another person standing which appears to have the "over-ride key"  when something happens at a register, and someone else who I have no clue why they are standing there.

So after my trip to the store yesterday, where they actually had TWO people working the check outs (and another three at the self checks)  and waiting in line for several minutes while someone had some issue with the price that rang up,  and didn't get the concept that all discounts are listed on the receipt, and don't come off on the screen as they ring things up. (the other open lane was the express, and I had maybe 18 items) I decided to send the market in question a comment about their store, and how things always seem to be.  (and suggest that they make it worth my while to use a self check)  I got the standard "we received your comments, and will get back to you if necessary" email, then this morning I got from corporate that "We're sorry! we're looking into the matter, and will pass your comments along to the proper manager"    I'll get some sort of stock answer and things won't change much because they can't keep people there...and what's also weird is that when they DO get someone that knows how to run a check out, they "promote" them to be the self check attendant!   Go figure!

What I was really hoping was that they would address the "incentive" for using the self checks and say that they'll take into consideration that if you use your "bonus/preferred shopper/loyalty" card, you'll get X% off of your order!   I'm hoping for the impossible...I'm sure!

Things I miss!

I was shopping with my wife out in the Colonial Park area this past weekend (locals will get it), and while I was sitting in the car (while she was in Dress Barn, and some other God-awful store)  I remembered a place that used to be called Media-Play that was just around the corner!  Wow...I used to spend HOURS in that place!   I’d walk in…go to the CD section, and start at “A”, and start looking at what CD’s were there, and stop when I’d reach my “allotted price amount”…although I’d also hit a few letters for bands that I was always in the market for, like Rush, Yes, Zappa…bands that I’d collect anything and everything!  (trust me…if something in those bands was released that I didn’t know about, or an odd import I didn’t have, I’d put something back)

That reminded me of when I’d go shopping with my parents years back, and we’d go to the Harrisburg East Mall...My mom would go in one direction, my father another, and I’d hit “Listening Booth”!  This was when LP’s were the big thing, and cassettes were starting to become popular. (8-tracks were on the way out, and you could usually find them in the $1.00 bin at G.C. Murphy’s or Kresge’s (K-Mart’s predecessor))  Back then I’d do the same thing, but was usually limited to ONE album, mainly because I had no money, and my allowance was next to nothing.

Once I started working, and had my own car (ok, at FIRST,  I also worked AT the mall, so I knew where I was spending my lunch hour) I would go for HOURS and pick out things I wanted.  There was also a great place across the river (that had a “head shop” in the back) and would pore over the used LP’s as well, hoping that they didn’t skip when I played them.  Even if I didn’t’ buy anything, I’d still love the thrill of the hunt, and start at “A”.  The import bin was always a fun place to stop as well, because for some reason, some bands used to add extra tracks to their “foreign” releases!   Once I got a better job and spent recklessly, it was just open season, then when I got the CD player not long after they came out, I was like a looney on a day pass!   (I won’t even mention when I got the car that had the CD player in 1988!)

My CD collection is well above the 2,000+ mark, then once I got the burner, and started trading bootleg recordings, it even got worse! (I’d be willing to bet I have about 5,000+ recorded items)  I have copy paper boxes with spindles of bootleg concert CD-r’s that I may have listened to ONCE, but that doesn’t even count what’s on my hard drives of things that I’ll probably never listen to, but have “just in case!” But I digress… as I was sitting there and reminiscing about the CD/Record stores, I realized that they are few and far between these days!   I remember that on a good Saturday, you could hit 2-3 area malls, and a few other spots to look for music.  Now that I live in Hummelstown, I remember the place where the OLD K-mart used to be, next to where Arooga’s is now (in fact, I think what was the record store is now a Chinese Buffet) But there was a shop that was called Record Connection (it was something else prior, and something else right before it finally closed)  And they were famous for getting albums on their day of release.  They had a West Shore store that would get the shipment, and someone would drive them over at about 3-4:00pm, and there would be a line depending upon who had a release that day.  They were also famous for concert tickets since they had a Ticketmaster machine!  So there was a line out the door for that at 10:00am on any given Saturday.  The store that it turned into was also famous for selling “bootleg” concerts for several bands. I picked up a few Rush and Pink Floyd concerts of VERY good quality in that store.  But those don’t sell anymore because you can find everything online, at no charge at all (I could only imagine how much I would have spent if I had to pay for all of my “recordings of indeterminate origin”)

I really miss those days, it was a great to go to a store, hang out for a while, and listen to the music as you were “starting at A”. Now it seems that you can do anything online, and you have to anticipate when something is being released so you can purchase it.  One nice thing is that if you get in when it’s announced, you can get bonus items, or something that’s autographed by the band, but it does kill the thrill of the hunt!

That's part of the collection:

"Stop for Pedestrian in Crosswalk"

No kidding!    I GET the concept, but in practice, I think it's a dumb thing.  What it's doing is making people less aware of their surroundings, and putting them into more danger than ever before.

When I was growing up, I was told to looks both ways before crossing the street.  Then you were told to look left, right, then left again before crossing. You were also told to not cross the street in the middle of the block, but growing up with my best friend living right across the street, I wasn't buying that!  (the rebel I was!)

Now with the signs, people do NOT watch where they are going, and about 75% of the people driving don't know whether to stop or not when they see someone approaching the crosswalk, so you almost rear end people who stop unexpectedly!

In essence, since people really do not know what to actually do in this case, I think that they either need to put stop signs in places where there are highly used crosswalks, or eliminate the law and go back to cars having the right of way.  With the way people are so engrossed in what's on their cell phone, people are going to get hurt, and I'm actually surprised (and thankful) that more haven't been hurt.

ADDENDUM:

Ok, so this morning, I was driving through Hershey coming home from the post office, and there's a crosswalk crossing the street from the flower shop to the little building with Bricker's Pizza...I'm following the slow flow of traffic, and I just happen to look to my left, and this little old lady is crossing...a car heading in the opposite direction that I was traveling in ALMOST clipped the poor lady...thankfully they stopped in time!  There really are way too many close calls to have this continue unless there's a stop sign involved!

Driving in Winter….

One thing I’ve always taken pride in was my ability to drive on bad snow and ice covered roads.  During my formative driving years, I worked at a local mall, and would go in early to buff floors before the store opened at 10:00. I would arrive usually before Mall Security opened the doors, and would just wait in my car until I saw them unlock the door at about 8:00am.  During the winter, I still went in because 99% of the time the mall did not close, and people were a little more thick skinned about getting to work. Two hour delays were made so that the people could get to work without endangering the kids waiting on the corner for the bus, and endanger the bus while attempting to drive to work… now it seems that two hour delays, and cancellation comes when the first snowflake falls… (But more on that later)

Seeing that I was at a LARGE parking lot in a car with rear wheel drive, I took it upon myself to have a little fun in the lot, and do DONUTS!  (mostly to see how a car worked in the snow, but also for fun)  I would do this until either the door was unlocked, or Mall Security came by and said “The door’s unlocked”!  So I’d park and go do my floors which were usually waste those days because of the crap that people dragged in on their shoes…but hey…it was a job! ($3.35 an hour baby!)  Then after my day, I’d drive home in the slop that was there, and do the shoveling. (well unless my mom got bored and went out and did it)
As the years rolled on, those years in the lot helped my driving ability, and I pretty much can drive in anything.  Although ice still presents a challenge since there is just NO WAY to really stop in it. Inertia takes first hand precedence on it.  Thankfully my first “test” of ice came on a lonely road with no other cars, in my 1976 Plymouth Volare` that actually had bumpers!   Cars need bumpers!   In this day and age with the way people drive, a slight bump is a costly thing!   A few years back when I had a Nissan Maxima (loved that car, but I out grew it with my hobbies) and I pulled out of a parking spot and bumped into a low trailer (that I didn’t see) and punctured my bumper guard.  Well that was a $1,500.00 venture with my insurance company! If I had an actual bumper, that would have been avoided!

Anyway…back to driving in the snow… Last weekend I spent driving in snow to take my wife to see my niece play field hockey in Lancaster…then in between games, my wife figured that it would be a good idea to come BACK to Hershey to go to church, then go down for her next game.  BAD IDEA!  The roads were bad, and it took twice as long for me to get there and back…the problem is that people driving in the bad weather RIDE THEIR BRAKES!  That’s a HUGE no-no in this kind of crud!   If you need to SLOW DOWN just take your foot off the pedal, and don’t tailgate…if the person in front of you is slowing down, just take your foot off the gas!  Simple enough!   People just can’t drive in this, and panic at the first sign of a brake light!   Lisa was getting mad at me because I was passing… I was just trying to avoid a rear end collision.

As far as how the schools are dealing with this these days… I remember way back hardly ever having a snow day. Two hour delays were fairly common, mainly because the schools wanted to give the teachers a time to drive to the school, the regular working people in the world time to get to work, so that they weren’t going to interfere with the busses with the kids on them. Fair enough!   We had a bus driver that lived up the street from me, Mrs. Billy!   I was riding her bus long before I was even going to school, when she’d drop off my brother at the corner, she’d ask if I wanted to go for a ride the rest of her trip around our neighborhood, before she’d drop me back off at my house.  Nice lady GREAT bus driver, and one that I’d trust anyone under her care!   All through grade school she drove me, rain snow, sleet, ice, etc.  No problems!  When it came time for me to start going to high school, the “schedule” came out and I was assigned to another bus. (The “freshman/sophomore” bus)  the lady driving the bus wasn’t as experienced as Mrs. Billy, in fact, I think she was just trained, and this was her first year.  During the first snow storm, I got onto her bus, and as we rounded the corner at the end of my street, there was a little skid…ok, whatever… then we started up Fulling Mill Road, which had a nice set of hills to climb.  We got about half way up and the bus wouldn’t go any further.  The rest of the kids on the bus were freaking out, and some of us that were more overzealous were giving her a lot of crap!  We finally DID make it to school, but that night a lot of us complained to our parents.  My mother just said “I’ll call the school tomorrow and tell them you’re riding Mrs. Billy’s bus, no exceptions!”  So she did, and I started riding with Mrs. Billy again…and had NO issues!   Back then you REALLY had to have a “state of emergency” before getting an entire day off because of the snow!

Fast forward to the 2000’s, when you’d think that the technology, training, and equipment are better, and you get to see on a regular basis that these schools are quick on the draw to pull the plug…I guess too many people are threatening liability, but hey, the kids suffer because they have 180 days to go, and if they get too many off, their year is extended.  Oh well, what can ya do!  I don’t have to deal with that!

Welcome to the Dark Side!

And it's not just the Moon!

I remember working years back, and people would have little candy dishes with the Hershey's Miniatures in them.  When you'd walk by the first time, you'd see the Krackel's all gone...the next time the Mr. Goodbar's, then the Milk Chocolate, and no one would even consider approaching the Special Dark's because they were apparently TABOO!

Well, not me... for some reason, I always had a taste for those, so I'd have a plentiful bounty as I wandered through the office...in fact, one of the secretaries I had to deal with a lot noticed that I liked them, and would ask if I wanted to take what she had so she could fill it up with more Krackel's, and such... I was in dark chocolate heaven!

Fast forward to 2015, and it seems that the Special Darks are the first to go... in fact, they have bags of JUST Special Darks, bags of dark chocolate M&M's, and Kisses, etc.  And when you walk by the candy dishes...the Milk Chocolate bars are the loners....Not a fan of Hershey's Milk Chocolate....so I have to pass them by.  Probably better for my waistline anyway....

Speaking of dark chocolate...remember when you got the bag of chips, and opened them up and poured them into the bowl for the party, there were always those 2 or 3 chips that were a little darker than the rest, and you quickly scarfed them up so no one else would get them...you'd savor their flavor...well NOW they sell the dark chips, and they are a DEADLY thing to have in your house!   I've been pretty weight conscious the past few years, and have lost a few pounds, trust me I feel better, and it's nice to get into some of the old clothes I've had sitting in a closet for a few years...but I'm now sorry that I tossed the BIG clothes I had because of these chips! THEY ARE ADDICTING!   When I know I'll be having some chips with my lunch, I seem to anticipate it, and pull the bag of chips down...and think "a few won't hurt"...then a few more...and a few more and...well you get the picture....I need help!

The last thing I'm thinking about in the dark realm is dark roast coffee!  I've always hated the stupid saying that some people said when they were asked about how they wanted their coffee.... "I like my coffee how I like my women...strong and black"  Kinda rude, and stupid, but I get it. (and apologies to any of my friends that may be offended by that comment)  I like my coffee strong, but I like a little cream and sugar in it..so whenever I make my coffee, I always put more than the usual allotted amount into the brewing basket to make it a little stronger...which I have to watch if Lisa is having coffee with me, then I have to abide by the rules, and even make it a LITTLE less strong for her.  I have been seeing the Dark Roast coffee's out there, and decided to try it once at either a Starbucks, or a Panera or someplace like that...so I've picked up the Dunkin' Dark for the occasional pot...good stuff! (but I still make it stronger)

Flavor is what it's all about..and the richer the flavor the better!

Spooky Nook

The past two weekends I was attending an indoor field hockey tournament for my two young nieces.  Last week was for the ladies that are in the 15-16 year old age group, this week was the younger 11-12 year old girls (and some boys).  All I can say is that the high school and college field hockey world is going have some awesome athletes in the coming years! These kids played an amazing and exciting game (that I have no clue how it works other than trying to get a little ball into a net)  And NOT only for Pennsylvania, these teams were from all over the East Coast, and some Midwest and the South!   But that's not really the purpose of this blog.... it's mostly about the facility that had this competition;

 Spooky Nook Sports!

This facility is a sight to see!  Indoor courts for field hockey, baseball/softball, basketball, climbing, a full fitness center, etc. They also have a large domed field, and some outside fields.  If you have the chance to go to something there, I recommend it...HOWEVER...their parking situation is like dealing with the Nazi's...oh there's PLENTY of places to park, but the way they force you into certain lots, and block entrances and exits is like dealing with the Hitler Youth movement of the 1930's... As you pull up to the facility, getting off of route 283, you see a huge flashing sign :SPOOKY NOOK SPORTS TURN HERE with big arrows ---->>>>>..ok, At least I know where I'm going, but once you make the turn and get close you are met with "security" and orange cones, and cones with bars on them making you go to certain areas.  Once you get to the predetermined lot of their choosing, you are met with more cones and bars, to force you to go a certain way, and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  So you follow, and look for a spot, and see one in the middle of the next row, so of course, you proceed to the end of that row, and you are met with more cones with bars on them...which means you need to do a U-turn (in between parked cars..most of which are more expensive than mine) and turn around...then when you DO get to the row with the parking spot, you notice  that someone else has already pulled in (again with a more expensive car) and you need to repeat the process.  (still with me)  The one sad part of all of this, is that there is a HUGE lot for handicapped with maybe 8-10 cars in it (and enough space for about 200) (and PLEASE don't get me wrong, I'm not against handicapped parking, just against the people that park there that are fully capable of parking elsewhere, and walking who aren't handicapped, OR the people that drop the physically challenged person off THEN proceed to the handicapped spot to take the last space away from someone that is handicapped and DRIVING, who actually NEEDS to park there, but now needs to find another space in the lot and walk a longer path to the door...I see this constantly at Hershey Med while I'm waiting to pick up my wife from work) (anyway...that's another rant for another day)  Ok, but besides the large handicap lot for a sports facility (I know parents and grand parents, and people attending things)  there is another HUGE PARKING LOT out "back" by the dome (which is weird to call back since it's at the front of the facility from the road...never mind)  that's cordoned off because the "front" lot isn't quite FULL yet?  Sorry, this set up makes no sense...just let the people park, stop trying to route the traffic, and just let it flow the way people are used to using a lot.

Now...the facility charges you $5.00 per day to park there..but rather than make you stop on the way in creating a line, (which I think is a good idea) you have to purchase a parking pass on your way OUT of the facility. (and creating the line leaving...but you're just going home and not making your child late for their practice or game)  There are a few places to get your pass, and signs on the doors reminding you..but I'm sure that people forget...not sure what they make you do if you forget, I'm so anal about things like that I made sure I got the pass...in fact I got the two day pass on Saturday (which has no price differential, it was $10.00)(and I was sweating out because of the weather being so bad this past weekend that they would have cancelled the festivities on Sunday, and  I would have been S-O-L!  Now speaking of doors...they also route you IN to the place from the out side...if you park in front, you just go in the main entrance..but if you park in BACK...you need to walk from the lot past the dome, then up a long windy sidewalk, past, two or three other closed doors, to the door where the security guy waits for you.  Mainly (from my perspective) to make sure you aren't bringing in any outside drinks for food because they have a cafeteria area!  Which means that if you are like me, when I go to my local fitness center for my daily work out, you CAN'T bring in your own personal Powerade or Gatorade, or even WATER in your "suck bottle" for when you work out!  Really?  So I need to pay your inflated prices (not the prices I get at Sam's Club for the bulk pack). Ok....so besides the fact that it's a good 30-40 minute drive from my house, I wouldn't be using their facility...so that's not my rant..

Anyway...with all that...it's still a cool facility, and like I said, if you DO get the chance to go see something there, I suggest it...just go with an open mind, and don't pull any road rage in the lots!  (and leave your Gatorade home!)

Welcome!

I figured that since diving season isn't working out at this time of the year...(probably should have done this earlier) and I like writing, I would put up a place to complain about things and save my wife from rolling her eyes so much.

Enjoy!
